Melvor Idle

A menu-driven RPG built around RuneScape-like skills, inventories, combat and long offline sessions.

The short verdict

Choose it for persistent skill goals and equipment planning rather than repeated rebirth loops.

Its depth comes from interlocking skills, not a traditional prestige ladder.

Editorial review

RuneScape with the running around removed: a superb goal machine, provided you can live with its online plumbing.

What players love, what breaks the spell and who should actually play it.

Melvor Idle understands that the best part of a skill grind is often the plan, not the animation. You queue woodcutting, turn logs into resources, feed those resources into another skill, then build toward gear, combat and mastery milestones. It is less about explosive prestige resets and more about owning a giant checklist whose parts constantly feed one another. That makes it fantastic as a workday companion: set a target, leave it alone, return to enough progress for the next decision.

The player consensus is unusually clear. RuneScape veterans love the familiar skill web without the subscription or click tax; completionists love always having another target. The recurring red flag is technical rather than mechanical: recent Steam reviews repeatedly complain about a single-player idle game depending on servers, along with save-sync and launch problems for some players. Our take is still positive, but not unconditional. The design is top-tier; the reliability model is the bit that needs watching.

Players keep praising

Deep interlocking skills, meaningful long-term goals and excellent check-in play across desktop and mobile.

The recurring friction

Server dependence and save concerns are a serious blemish on a game built around months of progress.

Best for

RuneScape refugees, planners and completionists who prefer persistent skills to repeated rebirths.

Skip it if

Always-online dependencies are a deal-breaker or you want flashy combat and fast resets.

System analysis

What playing it actually asks of you

These notes describe the shape of the documented game systems. They avoid exact offline caps or controller claims that have not been directly reproduced.

01

Core loop

Choose a skill, configure the required resources or equipment, and let that activity progress while you plan the next dependency in the account-wide economy.

02

Progression shape

Skills feed one another through materials, food, equipment and combat requirements. Progress is persistent; depth comes from interdependence rather than repeated global resets.

03

What happens when you return

Long periods away are central to the design. A useful return usually means collecting completed work, changing an activity and resolving the next inventory bottleneck.

04

Decision depth

The meaningful choices are sequencing skills, allocating bank space, preparing combat loadouts and deciding which slow requirement is worth starting before leaving.

05

Best session pattern

Well suited to one or two deliberate check-ins per day, with optional longer planning sessions when combat or new skill chains open.
